It’s that time of year when thoughts turn to what we can do better next year. For many of us, it may be social media. Love it or hate it, it’s not going anywhere. It's a necessary evil.

There is no secret. Being successful with social media marketing is the same as being successful in any other form of marketing.


Consistency in posting, in the image you portray, in the messaging you use and the brand you present is all it takes. Why create eight mediocre social channels, when one, done well and done regularly, is a sure-fire path to long-term success?

And statistics back up this notion. According to Techipedia, brands who are consistent in their branding are worth 20% more than their less consistent peers.

Creating multiple personalities across multiple media only serves to present an incoherent message to your customers. The number one mistake that will stall your success is working hard to build a social channel, only to let it fade because you've moved on to other things, or you're bored, or you're not seeing results as quickly as you'd like. Start small, and grow from there. Don't have time to do it yourself? Outsource it.

The truth is, when it comes to marketing - online or offline, there is no one single channel that will answer all your marketing goals. Focus on one or two. Do them excellently and consistently and success will follow.
