Resolutions for a better you

So, here we are. That icky, bitty time of year when we’re hopefully chilling out at home, taking a little time to relax and enjoy time with friends and family, before our office-based colleagues head back to their desks and start churning out a plethora of projects and new contracts that all need completing like, yesterday.

But now is a great time for us to take stock. This time of year, is naturally one of reflection, where we can look back at what was good and worked well for us, what was bad, that we'd like to avoid and what we hope to achieve in the year ahead.

Maybe we need to work smarter, not harder. Maybe we need to learns some new skills to diversify or enhance what we offer. Maybe we need to develop some new niches to work in or build some more long term retained clients. Perhaps a change to our work/life balance is needed, or we need to raise our fees to give us some freedom and ensure we're being paid what we deserve.

The thing is, unless we plan for those things, chances are that they will never happen. As soon as we get back into the melee of things, they get pushed to the bottom of our to-do lists, before they eventually fail to feature at all.

So now is the perfect time to take an hour and figure out what it is you want for your career in 2020. After all, you chose to become a freelancer and part of that is being able to be master (or mistress) of your own destiny.

Ask yourself the following questions:

  1. What worked well for me last year? Which project or client was the most rewarding to work on?
  2. What project paid the most? (It may not be the same as the most rewarding one.)
  3. How can we do more of the most rewarding and best paying jobs, and less of the poorly paid ones?
  4. Are our prices fair, compared to other freelancers?
  5. What other skills do we need to be a more attractive hire?
  6. How can we improve how we pitch to new clients? Are we marketing ourselves well? Is our website and LinkedIn profile up to date with great client's testimonials? Are we using SEO effectively to show up in website searches?
  7. Did we miss any opportunities for extra work from our favourite clients? What easy upsells did we miss?
  8. Are our back-office processes efficient? Could we work smarter by outsourcing accounting, bookkeeping, marketing etc.?
  9. Is our work life balance what we want it to be? Can we structure our days more efficiently to free up more spare time?

Ask yourself the questions and write yourself a list of all the changes you could make. Then pick your top three. Focus on making those happen as soon as possible. Then, the next three, and so on. Put the list somewhere you can see it so you always have a reminder of what you committed to do. Check back each week to see if you've made the progress you've hoped to make. If you haven't, commit to carving out more time the following week to make those things happen.

Small changes can deliver big results. But it all starts with you. Start 2020 as you mean to go on. You've got this.

What changes will you make?

Happy new year!
