According to a new study recently published, SME's now hire 4 freelancers for every 1 employee in order to fill essential gaps in their workforce.
Not only that, but many experts are predicting that freelancing will only become stronger in the future, with many big companies looking towards freelance talent as their only option.
This new study is based on a survey of 1000 SME's around the country, where 67% said they look to hire freelancers over traditional employees.
Who can blame them? At the end of the day, hiring a freelancer is more flexible for the company. They can simply get them when skills are required for a specific project, and the re-hire the same person when those skills are required again.
The study went on to discover that an average team working on a project within an SME now has 12 freelancers compared to just 3 employees. In 5 or 10 years time I can imagine that will be 15 to 0.
Interestingly, it also came to light that SMES are not necessarily loyal to freelancers in their region, with many of the companies surveyed admitting they typically hire staff from all of the world, and look for certain skills as their main priority, instead of where the person lives.
In most cases, the freelance professional doesn't have to actually arrive at the office to be working for an SME, and can work remotely from home.
It appears that SME's are just as comfortable hiring a freelancer from the UK as they are from anywhere else in the world, including Europe, North America, and Asia.
Compare this to a similar study from 10 years ago and you get a much different picture. In that study, SME's were asked about staff, and around 90% said their main source of employees was from the local area.
So things have already changed a lot in just 10 years, and this is expected to continue as more and more businesses become educated about the benefits of hiring a freelancer.
Also, let's not forget that finding any type of freelance professional is now easier than ever before, thanks to a range of freelance sites offering thousands of options at the click of a button.
No matter what skill you are looking for...simply use a freelance site to instantly find many different candidates for the job. It really doesn't get any easier for SME's to fill positions if you ask me.
