Basically, a webinar is a live video presentation that you can watch from the comfort of your own home on a computer, and then even ask questions to the HRMC staff that are hosting the webinar.
This means that if you have a particular question about your own freelance business that you want to ask the HMRC, but you don't want to spend 45 minutes on the phone and then end up speaking to someone who doesn't know the answer, then it's a good idea to get on these webinars.
The first webinar is on Monday 14th November and the topic will be all about getting started in self employment. This is perfect for people that are not yet freelancers or are on the verge of turning freelance but want more information about what to do next.
On Tuesday 15th November there is the second webinar hosted by HMRC and the topic here is all about business expenses. This is very important if you want to run a successful freelance business in my opinion, because once you start spending too much money then it becomes difficult to be successful.
Next up is a webinar on Wednesday 16th November and the topic on this one is record keeping. It doesn't matter if you have an accountant or not, you still need to be keeping detailed information about everything that comes in and goes out of your business. If you don't, then it is easy to lose track of where you are, and ultimately, you might not get your tax return correct at the end of the year.
The final webinar is on Thursday 17th November and the HMRC are going to give you more of an insight into the simpler income tax scheme, which is definitely worth a watch if you ask me.
Expect each webinar to last about 1 hour, although they might run a bit longer if everyone who attends starts to ask questions. This is why it's important to connect to the webinar early so you can ask your question and get it answered.
Who should attend these webinars? Obviously any freelancer will benefit from the information provided, but also sole traders, gig workers and people involved in business partnerships will also find the information relevant.
For most freelance professionals these webinars are certainly worth attending, especially if you are planning on going self employed soon or are new to working for yourself.
Just remember to get on early, and have your questions ready. Visit the official HMRC site for more information.
